County Magistrate Chao-Ching Lee, together with Chung Hsing University’s professor Dr. Yao-Xiang Yang and through the vigorous hard work of local farmers, Shinyi Township’s Kyoho grapes have become seedless! On July 27, Nantou County held a press conference and invited: Ms. Fang-Mei Liu of the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA), Dr. Si-Dong Hsu of the Vitaceae Research Center at Chung Hsing University, Mr. Ci-Hsiung Wu the head of Shinyi township agriculture council, other university professors, and government officials to witness the success of the first Kyoho seedless grapes in the nation.
Magistrate Lee visited Japan last year and upon his return, he stated he hoped to import Japans seedless grape technology to Nantou. Lee and all the farmers who were involved in this project wholeheartedly embraced using this technology. Last year during his visit in Japan he was invited to Yamanashi prefecture to experience and learn about the farming of Kyoho seedless grapes. Upon inspection he realized every bunch of grapes was worth about 1000 NT. Magistrate Lee decided right then and there it was time to bring this technology to his homeland of Taiwan. After collaboration with Chung Hsing University’s professor Dr. Yao-Xiang Yang and local farmers this hope became a reality.
Magistrate Lee emphasized that currently Shinyi Township’s Kyoho seedless grapes are selling at an average price of about 500 NT per 1 kg and sometimes more. This price is roughly ten times the price the original Shinyi grapes sold for. The healthy soil and water of Shinyi Township helps to assure the excellent quality of Shinyi Kyoho seedless grapes. Even County Magistrate Shojiki Ogino of Yamanashi prefecture praised the grapes as being better than their Japanese counterpart. Magistrate Ogino hopes that in the future these grapes can be exported to Japan. Quality control combined with beautiful packaging will help these grapes increase the overall grape market value. Magistrate Ogino also suggested Nantou collaborate with the hot spring industry, to promote tourism, by suggesting visitors to come and enjoy picking grapes during the day and bathe in the hot springs at night.
In order to meet the consumers demand, Taiwan has been researching new technologies for years. Mr. Ji-Zheng Liu of the AFA pointed out that, currently most of the imported grapes are seedless. He is very grateful for Magistrate Lee’s enthusiasm and for fostering the implementation of the seedless grape technology. Under Magistrate Lee’s directives, Dr. Yang, and many farmers worked hard on implementing the new technology into their practices and it has had great results. Nantou County is now the first county in the nation to produce seedless Kyoho grapes.
