????The Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival was held on the 27th. Because of the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, preventive measures were taken seriously during the event. The county government mobilized volunteers to provide masks on-site and called for maintaining social distance, as well as “Wearing masks before and after the swimming activity.” A total of 21,828 people went into the water to swim. In order to avoid cluster infection, the period of going into water was deliberately extended. The battle against the pandemic has begun for the first time in the nearly 40-year history of the Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival.

????In the 38th Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival, there were 1,998 teams with 21,828 people signing up, including 195 foreign swimmers in Taiwan and 171 physically challenged swimmers. Among them, 7 visually impaired swimmers participated in the team for the first time and the New Taipei City Life-saving Volunteer Association was responsible for their safety. They realized their “Sun Moon Lake” dream with perseverance. The spirit of never giving up is exactly what the Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival upholds. Affected by the pandemic, the county government has encountered lots of challenges in organizing the event. County Mayor Lin Ming-zhen said that the global pandemic condition is of high concern and he worried that the swimming carnival might not be able to go on during the pandemic prevention period. The county government consulted the central government and negotiated in the last week, and finally made a decision that swimmers must comply with “Wearing masks before and after the swimming activity” and that the preventive measures such as measuring body temperature must be reinforced, so that the swimming carnival can be held as scheduled.

????Lin Ming-zhen said that the number of participants for the swimming carnival, which wasn’t optimistic at the beginning, has increased. A total of 21,828 people signed up, including more than 100 foreigners living in Taiwan and 171 physically challenged people. Tourism-related business operators at Sun Moon Lake felt relieved after hearing that the swimming carnival will be held as planned, because everyone was worried that the suspension of the event would result in losses. To prevent that from happening, swimmers, accompanying relatives and friends were required to wear masks onshore. From the feeder stations along Provincial Highway 21 of Yuchi Township to the registration counter at Jiulongkou, as well as the assembly point at Zhaowu Pier, swimmers were not only required to wear masks, but also to pass through two temperature measuring points and one forehead temperature measuring point to ensure that there’s no gap in pandemic prevention or cause for infection.

????Starting at 7 o'clock in the morning, physically challenged people set off at Zhaowu Pier and proceeded to the Ita Thao Pier. After that, swimmers were allowed to set off as well. After overcoming physical and mental challenges, the first person to swim across Sun Moon Lake to Ita Thao was a student surnamed Chen from the National Chengchi University. It took him 49 minutes to swim the more than 3,000 meters. He said that he had cramps in his feet while swimming, but everything was fine and that he didn’t think about giving up. He started to enhance his training in the summer vacation for the event, and because he is in a swimming team, swimming is not difficult for him. The visually impaired swimmer Lai Chih-chieh, accompanied by his coach, was the first physically challenged swimmer to finish. He is 54 years old and a member of the Taipei Swimming Association for the Disabled. He has participated in the swimming carnival for more than 10 times. He praised the pandemic prevention work which was excellent. The water temperature today in Sun Moon Lake is moderate and suitable for holding activities.
