1,500 participants of the highly popular plum festival make crisp plums unfazed by the rain
The 2017 Nantou Plum Festival titled “Plum Battle” enjoys a high popularity. The online registration quota of 1,000 participants was filled in only 2-3 days. The Farmers’ Association of Xinyi Township therefore allocated an additional quota for on-site registration. This event attracted around 1,500 participants who made crisp plums with their own hands on March 26. The enthusiasm of all participants was not damped by the rainfall on that day. An interesting image composed of people making crisp plums while wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas presented itself.

In his address, County mayor Lin mentioned that he received numerous calls from county residents who had missed their chance to register which clearly showed the popularity of this event. County mayor Lin further stated that this activity also marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Plum Winery. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to the Farmers’ Association of Xinyi Township for their long-term efforts and contributions in the promotion of agricultural produce and processed products and their concern for the livelihood of farmers. These efforts have generated great benefits for local farmers.

Mr. Huang, Chih-Hui, Director-General of the Xinyi Township Farmers’ Association, pointed out that late March is the plum harvest season. The county government organized a series of plum festival activities in cooperation with plum producing townships within the county. The Xinyi Township Farmers’ Association initiated the flurry of activities with its “Plum Battle” event. The online registration quota of 1,000 was filled quickly. The association therefore allocated an additional quota for on-site registration, which was expected to attract a total of 1,500 participants.

In addition to the main DIY event featuring 1,000 participants making crisp plums, the Farmers’ Association also celebrated the 15th anniversary of the founding of the winery. Numerous free treats and offers were also available including free tasting of plum dishes, aboriginal-style roasted pig, aboriginal rice wine (free gift with purchase while supply lasted) musical feasts, and the Ritual of Telling of Heroic Deeds performed by Xinxiang Elementary School. The event attracted a large number of participants despite the rain.

The 1,000 participants included VIP guests such as Mr. Chen, Chih-Ching, former director of the Farmers’ Association, Legislator Hsu, Shu-Hwa, County Council members Chen, Shu-Hui and Hung, Ming-Ko, and Xinyi Township Mayor Shih Chiang.

In addition to the 1,000-participant crisp plum DIY activity on 26th, the Nantou County Farmers’ Association, and the Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives of Guoxing, Renai, Shuili, and Xinyi Township will also organize hands-on DIY events for the promotion of green plums all over Taiwan. People who are interested in these activities can contact the respective Farmers’ Association (Don’t drink and drive).
