Ophthalmology clinic to be launched in the remote area of Nantou
    To promote ophthalmology service in remote areas, the Nantou County Government has raised NT$1 million specially to purchase a whole set of ophthalmology equipment and help clinics, hospitals, and ophthalmologists to provide medical service in remote areas. On January 4, the inauguration ceremony of the Jhongliao Township Public Health Center was held. In the future, ophthalmology services will be provided at 6 Health Centers including Jhongliao Township Public Health Center, Mingjian Public Health Center, Jiji Public Health Center, Lugu Public Health Center, Guoxing Public Health Center, and Yuchih Public Health Center, providing much convenience for people in obtaining medical service.

    The people at Jhongliao know that ophthalmology services are provided by physicians of China Medical University Hospital. When the clinic opens at 9:00 AM, it attracts over 40 patients to make appointments to have their eyes checked. In the inauguration ceremony, the personnel of the Health Bureau taught people to do eye exercises. Magistrate Lin Ming-chen also queued up with the people to have his eyes examined. County Councilors Lai Yen-hsueh, Liao Yi-hsien, and Liao Tzu-yu, Secretary-General of Nantou County Council Chen Kuo-chung, and Jhongliao Township Mayor Chang Yung-hui attended the ceremony to express their gratitude to the County Government in providing ophthalmology services to people living in remote areas, showing their care and concern.

    In places like Nantou, Puli, Caotun, Jhushan, and Shueili, there are local hospitals and ophthalmology clinics. In both Xinyi Township and Renai Township, the NHI Medical Promotion Plan for Remote Areas and Offshore Islands is implemented to guard the health of people’s eyes. To save people in other areas the trouble of traveling long distances to get eye treatment, the Nantou County Government has purchased a slit-lamp microscope, computer ophthalmic refractometer, tonometer, hand-held ophthamoscope, indirect ophthamoscope, and other equipment to allow the 6 public health center use them in turn. Optometrists from China Medical University Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Puli Christian Hospital, Chen Tsu-yung Eye Clinic, Puli Chuang Eye Clinic, Weikuo Eye Clinic and more will be providing ophthalmology services to people in this area.

    Magistrate Lin expressed that the Nantou County Government pays much attention to the medical resources in remote areas. To promote ophthalmology service in remote areas, the Nantou County Government purchased equipment for their use. For those medical services that haven’t provided outpatient service, the Nantou County Government will request medical personnel to travel to the countryside regularly to provide people medical services to maintain their health and well-being.

    The Health Bureau of the Nantou County Government pointed out that diabetes is highly related to diabetic retinopathy. At present, the ophthalmology outpatient service will be held for three months on a trial basis to find out the peoples’ requirements. With these results, the possibilities of purchasing more equipment will be considered. We welcome school children and the public with needs to use this service.
