The 37th Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival brought crowds and trade opportunities
The 37th Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival was held on September 1. With 23,428 swimmers coming from 36 countries in the world participated in the contest. Former President Ma Ying-jeou, Former Vice President Wu Den-yih, Mayor Lin Ming-zhen of Nantou County fired the starting guns to announce the commencement of the carnival. Ma Ying-jeou swam across the Sun Moon Lake for the seventh time in 2hrs10mins.
This year, there were 1772 teams participating in the Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival. There were also 1742 international swimmers coming from 36 countries, including USA, Mainland China, Malaysia, Japan, UK, France, South Africa, Canada, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Columbia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Korea, Macao, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, India, Poland, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Mexico, Finland, Chile, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Iran, Israel, Paraguay, and more. In addition, there were 1310 swimmers who participated in the carnival. Worthy of mentioning, there were also 118 disabled athletes who challenged the game. Their determination and spirit were worthy of high praise.
Mayor Lin Ming-zhen pointed out that it was the 37th anniversary of the Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival, which attracted both local and international swimmers to join it. It was not only a swimming carnival popular among people but also an activity in the iTaiwan – People Exercise Project promoted by the Sports Administration, Ministry of Education. It proved that the swimming carnival was “truly” an international sports activity. Especially, there were about twenty thousand swimmers gathered at Sun Moon Lake, bringing Nantou at least NT$200 million trade opportunities from the sports tourism industry.
