On 9/21 National Disaster Preparedness Day, Vice President Chen and the teachers and students of Sheliao Junior High School performed the drill together
    It is the 20th anniversary of 9/21 Earthquake this year. In collaboration with the Executive Yuan to hold the 2019 National Disaster Preparedness Day, on September 20, the eve of 9/21, an earthquake escape drill was conducted at Sheliao Junior High School Zhushan Township. Hosted by Vice-President Chen Jian-ren and Deputy Mayor Chen Zheng-sheng, all the teachers and students participated in the drill with prompt and accurate procedure. Their familiarity to the SOP of earthquake response won high praise form Vice President Chen and Deputy Mayor Chen. They encouraged to school to be ready to cope with different situations to make efficient response when natural disasters happen.

    At about 9:00am Vice-President Chen, Deputy Mayor Chen, Political Deputy Minister Fan Sun-lu, and the students were having a lesson in the classroom. The earthquake escape drill began at 9:21am when the national class alarm was released. When the teachers and students heard the alarm, they followed the three steps of earthquake response “lie down, take cover, and hold” to conduct the disaster response procedure. The three officials performed the drill together with the teachers and students. When the earthquake ceased, Principal Huang Jian-shu announced to follow the three don’t principles – don’t talk, don’t run, and don’t push. They practiced the evacuation drill according to the planned routes and gathered at the playground, waiting for the operation of response routine, emergency paramedic, and hospitalization. The drill ended perfectly with the comforting songs performed by Shin Siang Elementary School Choir.

    Deputy Mayor Chen expressed that Nantou was the triggering point of the 9/21 Earthquake. After 20 years of effort, the earthquake response skills have been improving. It relies on the performance of regular drills to promote the know-how and crisis conscious in ordinary time to ensure people’s safety and minimize casualty during disasters. By performing regular drills, it allowed the teachers and students to be familiar with the earthquake response procedures to minimize the casualty and loss during disasters.
