Joint Declaration of Seven Heads of Counties and Cities in Central Taiwan Regarding the Reduction of Coal Consumption by Taichung Power Plant
On the 3rd, Taichung-Changhua-Nantou-Miaoli Regional Governance Platform summoned the emergency conference regarding the issue of air pollution. In the conference, Magistrate Lin Ming-zhen of Nantou County proposed a substantial way for the 6 million inhabitants of central Taiwan to “save themselves,” including filing a lawsuit to Taiwan Power Company and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and summoned people living in central Taiwan to protest against Taichung Power Plant. In the conference, the heads signed a joint declaration regarding the reduction of coal consumption, advocating the central government pay attention to the issue of air pollution caused by fossil fuel power generation.
Magistrate Lin Min-zhen of Nantou County pointed out that the air pollution caused by fossil fuel power generation by Taichung Power Plant has seriously threatened the health of Nantou’s residents. As a result, the percentage of people suffering from lung adenocarcinoma ranks the first in Taiwan. He filed a lawsuit against the manager of Taichung Power Plant and the Minister of Economic Affairs last year; however, there isn’t any update regarding this case after one year. He expected Mayor Lu of Taichung City to lead the heads of 7 counties and cities to file a new lawsuit. In a sense, Taichung Power Plant drags people living in central Taiwan into an environment of chronic suicide with air pollution, exposing them to threats to their health.
The heads of seven counties and cities signed the “Joint Declaration of Seven Heads of Counties and Cities in Central Taiwan Regarding the Reduction of Coal Consumption by Taichung Power Plant” with six major appeals, immediately, including the seven counties and cities in Taichung-Changhua-Nantou-Miaoli Regional Governance Platform support Taichung City to enforce the Raw Coal Control Self-governance Ordinance to limit the maximum usage quantity to 11.04 million metric tons. There is no 10% fault tolerance for people’s health. They also advocate the central government pay attention to the air-pollution problem caused by fossil fuels and request the central government speed up the promotion of green energy and reduce the percentage of fossil fuel power generation in order to improve the air-pollution problem in central Taiwan.
