    On March 26, Nantou County Government held the press conference for the 2020 Nantou Plum Festival at the lawn of Nantou County Government Hall Square. Deputy Magistrate Chen Cheng-sheng invited everyone to go outdoors and fight the pandemic healthily during the growing season of plums. 104 small-scale plum DIY experiencing activities will be held around Taiwan. He welcomed everyone to enjoy tasting plums, take part in agricultural and educational experiences, and enjoy the pleasure of making plums and plum dishes on their own.

    Distinguished guests including Councilor Tseng Chen-yen, Director Chen Jui-ching of the Department of Agriculture, Director Shih Chiang of the Indigenous Peoples Bureau, Executive Secretary Huang Chih-hui of Xinyi Township Farmers’ Association, and Executive Secretary Yeh Jung-hsin of Guoxing Township Farmers’ Association attended the press conference and experienced making crispy plum and the handmade vegetarian dish of perilla tofu salad together. Together, they campaigned and promoted the event, while there were also exhibitions of various processed plum foods from different townships and city farmers’ associations on the occasion.

    Deputy Magistrate Chen stated that Nantou County Government will choose to hold a series activities for Nantou County Plum Festival during the growing season of green plums every year, allowing citizens to admire plums, taste plums, have fun, promote and enable people to experience the outstanding plum products from Nantou. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s thousand-people plum making large activity was cancelled and small DIY plum making classes consisting of fewer than 20 people are being held for promotion. Classes will be available from March 23 to May 10 and are open for application.

    Deputy Magistrate Chen pointed out that this year’s plums enjoyed a great harvest and their quantity and quality have greatly increased. Although mass events must be avoided due to the pandemic, the county government’s passion on promoting plums will not be diminished, especially are the 4 townships of Xinyi, Shuili, Guoxing and Renai constitute 45% of Taiwan’s plum production. Processed green plum products are not only versatile, but delicious, while edible plums are good for the human body. He expected that through such promotion, citizens can have a better understanding on the green plum industry and fall in love with plum products.
