Magistrate Lin shows appreciation to firefighters at the Caotun temporary dumping ground and calls on the central government to face up to the coordination for disposal of local waste, November 23
Magistrate Lin Ming-chen went to the Caotun temporary dumping ground on the morning of the 23rd, along with Legislator Ma Wen-chun and Hsu Shu-hua, to show support for the firefighters and environmental protection personnel who work hard to put out fires. Legislator Ma Wen-chun also gave protective masks to the on-site staff to ensure the safety of all personnel when trying to control the fire in the dumping ground.
Li Chien-yu, the general commander of the Environmental Inspectorate and the on-site commander of the Environmental Protection Administration, said that more than 50,000 metric tons of garbage temporarily piled up in Caotun temporary dumping ground will enter the third phase of outsourcing garbage collection after the smoldering fire is controlled. That is, the EPA will subsidize Caotun Township Office to outsource the garbage collection. But the general commander also said that the amount of garbage in Caotun temporary dumping ground would be processed to an acceptable condition until the end of next year.
Therefore, Magistrate Lin emphasized that in addition to urging the EPA to continue to assist in manpower, equipment and funding, reinforcing the control of the safety of Caotun temporary dumping ground and preventing the recurrence of fires, the County Government has also requested the central government to speed up the coordination process for removal sites, so that 50,000 tons of garbage in Caotun temporary dumping ground can be outsourced as soon as possible for proper disposal, allowing the local people not to worry about the recurrence of fires throughout the next year.
Magistrate Lin also said that the Nantou County Government not only actively reinforces the promotion of the Green Energy Sustainable Measures for the Disposal of Waste, but also urges all counties and cities across the country to provide waste incineration capacity, even just ten tons or twenty tons of capacity per day would be helpful for Nantou to deal with a large amount of old waste that still had nowhere to be disposed of.
Legislator Ma Wen-chun and Hsu Shu-hua also pointed out that Nantou County, in line with the central policy, stopped building large-scale incinerators more than 10 years ago. The Environmental Protection Administration should have actively coordinated the disposal of waste in Nantou by outsourcing to other counties and cities. However, it wasn’t the case. They hope that the Environmental Protection Administration will step up efforts to coordinate where to dispose of the garbage in Nantou County and stop leaving the problem to local governments that have little funding and no power. In addition, Hsu Shu-hua also said that the Environmental Protection Administration should reinforce the supervision of whether or not the county and city government prioritize the disposal of industrial waste or non-general household waste to avoid the situation that counties and cities without incinerators, like Nantou, have no place to transport waste for disposal due to higher fees for the use of incinerators in other counties and cities.
