The Nantou County Government, Chinese Taipei Cycling Association, and Zi-Nan Temple jointly organized the 8th “2020 Never Stop: Zi-Nan Temple 99.9K Countrywide Cycling Challenges,” which was held at the first parking lot of the Zhushan Training Center of National Fire Agency in the early morning of the 29th. Former President Ma Ying-jeou participated for the third time and took the countrywide cycling challenges with 2,093 cyclists. Among the participants this year, there were 1,811 men and 280 women. The oldest competitor was 79 years old and the youngest, 9 years old. The 2020 NeverStop: Zi-Nan Temple 99.9K Countrywide Cycling Challenges started at 6 am on the 29th. Magistrate Lin Ming-chen, Councilor Yu Hao and Tseng Chen-yen, Mayor of Zhushan Township Chen Tung-mu, Director of Department of Education Lu Cheng-wei, and Tsai I-chu, the vice chairman of Nantou Sports Association, and Peng Chien-yung, the chairman of Chinese Taipei Cycling Association, accompanied former President Ma Ying-jeou to lead the ride and kick off the event. More than 2,000 participants set off at the same time, and the scene was magnificent. All participants tried their best, and Wu Jen-chieh was the first to return to the finish line with 2 hours, 40 minutes and 16.761 seconds. Then, Lin Ming-hsien ranked second with 2 hours, 43 minutes and 19.806 seconds, and the German Rommeswinkel ranked third with 2 hours, 43 minutes and 25.611 seconds. The former President Ma also successfully finished the ride in 5 hours and 47 minutes. Magistrate Lin said that the United Nations officially declared June 3 as “World Bicycle Day,” with the unanimous resolution in a plenary session with the theme: “Sports for development and peace: Building a peaceful and better world through sports and the Olympic ideal” at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly on April 12, 2018. Therefore, the county government, Chinese Taipei Cycling Association, and Zi-Nan Temple decided to hold a large-scale 99.9K countrywide cycling event on the first Sunday of June every year, to echo World Bicycle Day. Magistrate Lin also said that in recent years, a wave of cycling raged across the country. Nantou County has held the “Never Stop to Challenge the Highest Point in Taiwan” and Tataka Cycling Race for 15 consecutive times. Both events feature the hill climbing challenge. Therefore, the county government, Chinese Taipei Cycling Association and the chairman of Zi-Nan Temple Chuang Chiu-an co-organized the 99.9K Countrywide Cycling Challenges, with the Zhushan Training Center of the National Fire Agency as the start and end of the event. The route is undulating and challenging. Participants who finish the whole route within 7 hours will be awarded a certificate, as well as a specially designed, unique “spinning medal” and a wealth-bringing coin of the Earth God for the Year of the Rat provided by Zi-Nan Temple.
