The Nantou County Government used the cantilever construction method to overcome the barrier in the last 800-meter section of the Nantou Township 70 Road to connect Chilin Village of Puli Township and Chungcheng Village of Ren-ai Township. The steep terrain difficulty of the upper and lower slopes was overcome, and the highest construction quality was achieved with minimum excavation work, accomplishing the two major goals of widening the road and preventing disasters. The landlords along the route who were worried more about the interruption than the benefits changed their opposition and turned to full support. After the construction project was completed smoothly and on schedule, it won the twentieth National Public Construction Golden Quality Award. On the 5th, County Magistrate Lin, Ming-Chen and local representatives cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening to traffic. The happy and satisfied smiles of the residents became the most beautiful view. County Magistrate Lin pointed out that thanks to too many people, the Nantou Township 70 Road was able to be widened and opened to traffic. The Directorate General of Highways affirmed the performance of Nantou County’s living circle programs and showed its strong support by approving subsidies up to NT$ 90 million for the road widening project of the living circle program. Legislators Ma, Wen-Chun; Hsu, Shu-Hua; and many county councilors have made contributions. Also, with the dedication of the Department of Public Works of Nantou County Government, the Indigenous Peoples Bureau, the team of Ren-ai Township Office and the construction companies that were in charge of the construction, design, supervision and implementation, the best quality of the project was achieved, and the schedule was met efficiently. As a result, the 800-meter-long Nantou Township 70 Road widening project was successfully completed with innovative construction methods. The Department of Public Works of the County Government pointed out that the Nantou Township 70 Road widening project aims to widen the width to 7.5m for a two-way mixed lane. The ‘cantilever construction method’ was adopted to conform to the terrain and surrounding environment to avoid excessive damage and greatly reduce the sand and gravel created due to the excavation and filling works while caring for the ecosystem and environment. The design principle is to adopt the balanced torques method on both sides to achieve the stability of the cantilever end, which is better than other traditional construction methods in terms of construction and ecological maintenance. In addition, the anticorrosion and antirust technology of zinc aluminum coating were adopted in the construction of the trestle girder, enhancing the lifespan of the trestle bridge girder, and the nameplates were set up at the start and end of the trestle bridge for future bridge inspections by the county government. The new construction method minimizes environmental damage and is expected to become a model for mountain pass widening.
