Thanks to stable weather conditions and the maximum efforts of the construction team, the Fa-Xiang Open-cut Tunnel Rehabilitation Project at Nantou 89th Country Road 46K+300 in Ren’ai Township, which costs more than NT$ 143 million, was completed three months earlier than the original schedule. County Magistrate Lin Ming-Chen has conducted an inspection in person and acknowledged the quality. The opening ceremony was held on the 25th and the road is officially open to traffic, providing a safe way for more than 2,000 residents of 3 villages and 6 tribes along Lixing Industrial Road to return home. In the past, the Nantou 89th Country Road (Lixing Industrial Road) in Ren’ai Township would collapse whenever it rained, seriously affecting the transportation in remote areas. It was known as the worst road in Taiwan. Since Lin Ming-Chen took office, he has been striving for funding to improve it every year and the quality of the road conditions has been improved year by year. The 46K+300 section of Nantou 89th Country Road was seriously damaged by the Severe Tropical Storm Talim in 2012. With the efforts of County Magistrate Lin and the support of Legislator Hsu Shu-Hua, the Directorate General of Highways has approved a subsidy of NT$ 139.4 million for the project, which was commissioned to contractors in June 2021 and officially went into construction in September 2021. The open cut technique was used at rock slump areas; after that, the road was blocked due to the sliding of upper and lower slopes and roadbeds. The expense was then increased to more than NT$ 143 million. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in 600 calendar days, which was expected to be completed on March 25, 2022. An open-cut tunnel with a length of 172 meters, a width of 6 meters and a height of 5.3 to 7.5 meters was designed, connecting the approach roads of 88 meters. Along the way, several water shafts, wells, horizontal drainage pipes, drainage box culverts, blind drainage conduit, gravity retaining walls and shotcrete slope protection were set up, so that the structure can be as complete as possible. With the efforts of the construction team, the completion of the project was completed ahead of schedule at the end of December 2021. County Magistrate Lin says several sections of Nantou 89th Country Road were damaged due to the Typhoon Talim. The county government proposed the disaster restoration project to the Public Construction Commission and the approved total funding was more than NT$ 140 million. The open-cut tunnel has been carefully designed and built, hoping to provide a more convenient and safer road to Ren’ai Township. Now the project is completed ahead of schedule, residents of the 6 tribes in the Li-Fa-Xian area can make use of the complete road. It is undoubtedly the best gift for people in the local areas before Lunar New Year.
