The Nantou County Government has decided to use the BOT model and invest about NTD 1.5 billion to build a green energy sustainable center (recovered fuel manufacturing plant) that can process 350 tons of waste a day. County Magistrate Lin Ming-chen and Director Li Yi-shu of the Environmental Protection Bureau emphasized in public that the green energy sustainable center isn’t an incinerator and that no waste will be burned there. Furthermore, waste will be collected and sealed before being transported to the green energy sustainable center, so as to make sure that no waste will be left somewhere during transport. More importantly, no more waste will be left unprocessed in Nantou after the operation of the green energy sustainable center begins. It would take about 2 years for contractors to complete the construction and it is expected to dispose of 20 tons of waste left unprocessed in six years. County Magistrate Lin said that 250 tons of waste are generated in Nantou a day, but only 100 tons of them can be incinerated outside the county, which means 150 tons of waste are left unprocessed in various townships a day. According to the statistics, there are 200,000 tons of waste left unprocessed in Nantou as of May this year. Therefore, it’s necessary to build a waste disposal facility in Nantou, which is why the county government decided to build a green energy sustainable center despite tremendous challenges. Lin also said the estimated processing capacity is 360 tons a day, including 250 tons of domestic refuse, 10 tons of bulky refuse, 40 tons of general industrial waste, and 60 tons of sorted and sealed waste. With the center, Nantou’s waste problems can be resolved and assistance can be provided to enterprises for the disposal of general industrial waste.
