Last year’s Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival was canceled due to the pandemic. This year, the event will be held on September 4. For epidemic prevention, the maximum participant is 20,000 people. The registration will be available online from July 1. However, a successful registration doesn’t guarantee the permission to swim. The Nantou County Government sets 5 thresholds for epidemic prevention, which might be the strictest rules in a swimming event in history. Deputy County Magistrate Chen Cheng-sheng said last year’s Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival was canceled due to the pandemic, but large-scale events aren’t prohibited by the central government this year. For now, the county government decided to hold the Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival as usual. But for epidemic prevention, several rules are set up in the event. Swimmers are required to follow the rules. First threshold: Registration is available to those who’ve received three shots of vaccines, and foreigners are forbidden from participating (except for those living abroad or working in Taiwan); second threshold: participants must provide a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours before taking a dip; third threshold: On the event day, a temperature check must be conducted before taking a dip. Isolation and examination are required if symptoms like fever or cough are detected; fourth threshold: participants must go through a decontamination door for epidemic prevention; fifth threshold: participants must wear a mask before taking a dip and after coming out of the water to prevent diseases from spreading.
