    The opening ceremony of the 6th Anniversary of the Nantou Tea Expo was grandly held on October 3 at the Chunghsin Hall, Chunghsin New Village. Lasting for 9 days, its closing ceremony was held on the 11th. It attracted about 320 thousand visitors, creating and brilliantly achieving a product value of about NT$42 million. Magistrate Lin Ming-chen enthusiastically invited tea lovers in Taiwan to visit Nantou and drink quality Nantou tea. They were also invited to join the 10 featured activities, such as Thousand People Tea Party, Thousand People Tea Rolling, Golden Tea Tasting, Floating Tea Cup Meet and more.

    Magistrate Lin said that Nantou is an important tea growing area in Taiwan, with more than 55% of the area in the county dedicated to tea growing, producing more than 70% of the national tea output, which is the major economic income of Nantou. In recent years, with the help and guidance of agricultural departments and farmers’ associations at various levels, the farmers have learned how to promote the tea’s qualities. With high self-demand, the farmers grew tea with the idea of sustaining operations. As a result, they have grown tea with all their efforts to make it safe for the consumers. Selling good tea with high safety standards, it has opened up wider and further marketing channels for the Nantou tea.

    Magistrate Lin said that this year, the performances at the Tea Expo had been rather diverse, with local and international tea art and tea culture shows presented by Korea, Japan, Taiwan and other countries. In addition, there was the of Golden Tea Tasting event, offering visitors more than 10 kinds of premium tea, first class tea, and more. He welcomed people to taste and choose Nantou tea for its excellent quality and high safety standards. Deputy Magistrate Chen said that the number of visitors soared from the 250 thousand to 320 thousand this year, with the production value increasing from NT 25 million to about NT$40 million. The Thousand People Tea Rolling event had attracted about 1,200 visitors, a brilliant accomplishment.

    In the Tea Expo this year, there were many exciting activities, including the International Tea Art Show, Bamboo Craft Exhibition, World Tea Tour, Tea People Fashion, Black Tea Gallery, Tea Snacks Friendship, Tea Flea Market, Parent-Child Drawing Contest, Tea Calligraphy Exhibition, Farm Produce Fair, Hospitable Lei Teahouse, and more. There were more than 2000 people who booked to join the Thousand People Tea Party with 350 tables only. More than 10 kinds of premium tea and first class tea were offered to visitors in the Golden Tea Tasting gallery, to imitate the “floating tea cup” atmosphere depicted in Wang Xi-zhi’s “Lanting Xu.” The 9-day activity had made a whole new record in the number of visitors and production value.

    Deputy Magistrate Chen pointed out that with the efforts of the Council of Agricultural Affairs, County Government, farmers’ associations at various levels, and grass-root farmers for years, the tea industry had performed brilliantly. He expected the Tea Expo for the next years to be larger in scale, marketing tea to international channels.
