Global Indigenous Peoples Performing Arts Festival Kicks Off in Nantou; Parade of 8 Nations in Exotic Carnival-Style
“The 3rd Global Indigenous Peoples Performing Arts Festival” event was held and kicked off in Nantou on August 2, 2016. Indigenous people coming from 8 nations gathered together to participate in the parade at 3pm. The group of 8 nations started the parade on Jixian Rd. and passed through Minzu Rd., Fuxing Rd., and other main roads. Each performing arts group from each nation performed brilliantly and attracted visitors to stop by and take a look at the show. In the evening, teams of 8 nations and domestic groups held a public performance at the county stadium. It allowed people to enjoy the carnival while experiencing the aboriginal way of life.

The parade in the afternoon took place in two intersections; one was located at the cross intersection of Minzu Rd. and Fuxing Rd., and the other one was located at the intersection of Fuxing Rd. and Sanhe 3rd Rd. People danced in the parade to show different country styles. The indigenous groups of performing arts came from these 5 countries - Australia, Chili, Tahiti, Malaysia, and New Zealand who put on their traditional outfits and danced; their dance performances enriched visitors’ experience on the street in Nantou. The street was full of exotic dancers at once, which created contrasts within the city view. People cannot but shout out in fun as if they were experiencing the chrono-displacement.

Later at night, Deputy Magistrate Chen Cheng-Sheng wore the traditional Seediq outfit. While delivering his speech, he said the Indigenous People Meeting decided that the show would be held in Nantou. It showed how the government put much emphasis on the indigenous people who live in Nantou. People are allowed to watch the show once so that they can appreciate the performance of 8 nations from Africa and Latin America. It is a once-in-a lifetime event. The government hopes to increase people’s understanding of the indigenous people through the arts so that it can promote ethnic assimilation.

To promote aboriginal music and dance culture and increase international exchange, the Council of Indigenous Peoples held the “Global Indigenous Peoples Performing Arts Festival” in Taipei, Nantou, Pingtung and Taitung. The event began from July 30 to August 7, 2016.
