Nantou County Government Engaged in Disaster Relief and Reconstruction Work after Typhoon Khanun Bombarded Renai Township with Heavy Rain, Aug 13th
The mountainous area in Renai Towhship, Nantou County, was battered by rain from Typhoon Khanun (卡努). County Mayor Hsu ShuHua expressed her gratitude to the central government, local governments, and all sectors of society for their concern and aid. In the other hand, the county government is taking the situation in hand and maintaining close contact with the Renai Township Office to facilitate the rehabilitation and recovery work after disaster. Due to the heavy rain struck the mountainous area in Renai Towhship on 4th, the township office announced the school and office closures. County Mayor Hsu rushed to ShouCheng Bridge (守城橋), located in Danan Vil, Puli Township, to inspect the bridge subsidence right after she was informed in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Deputy County Mayor Wang RuiDe immediately stationed at the disaster prevention center and personally direct the rescue and relief work. On the 6th, County Mayor Hsu went to the Nantou County Stadium to concern about the preparation and airdrop of relief supplies. A total of nearly 50 volunteers from Tzu Chi and Nantou City's Jiahe and the Yingnan community worked as a team, assisting to sort, count and pack the supplies donated by public and then move to the helicopters for rapid transportation to the disaster area. Key road connection for Renai Township, such as township roads 85, 89 and Provincial Highway No. 14, was damaged, collapsed and even blocked traffic in many places due to the torrential rainfall caused by the typhoon. The county government immediately put in efforts on clearing the road with a total of 100 disaster relief machines sent out instantly by other local governments, including Taichung City, Yunlin County, Hsinchu County, etc. Meanwhile, other cities and counties, such as Taipei City, Hsinchu City, Chiayi City, and Changhua County, expressed they were on standby and were ready to provide support at any time. During the typhoon, President Tsai IngWen and Vice Premier of the Executive Yuan Cheng WenTsan both went to Renai Township to inspect the disaster. County Mayor Hsu expressed her gratitude to the central government for taking the Renai typhoon disaster seriously, responding quickly to the needs of Nantou County, and dispatching military personnel to assist with disaster relief efforts. Moreover, she also thanked local governments for their assistance on providing heavy machinery and personnel for disaster relief after the Khanun disaster. After Typhoon Khanun, the county government continued to carry out recovery works, such as fallen rocks removal, disaster situation control, and environmental disinfection. As of the 13th, no more roads were damaged or blocked and no more people stranded, however, a total of 967.14 hectares of crops were damaged in the county, with losses amounting to NTD 165.25 million. The county government announced that the application period for cash assistance will be from August 10 to August 19, and it is seeking to obtain a cash assistance amount of approximately NTD 159.18 million from the central government. In addition, 67.2 hectares of farmland were lost and submerged, with a total loss of NTD 6.46 million. For which, the county's disaster reserve fund of NTD 10 million was authorized to be utilized to cover the damage.
