In the 63rd National Primary and High School Science Fair (全國科學展覽會), Nantou County won the 1st place of the County and City Team Award again for its outstanding performance. The county government recognized the award-winning teachers and students on the afternoon of the 22nd, and presented them with cash prizes and trophies. County Mayor Hsu ShuHua said that Nantou County has been winning awards for its outstanding educational performance for many years, and the science fair, the national competition, this year is definitely a great success. The county government has devoted a lot of educational resources to encourage students to explore science and nature, and to discover their curiosity. Many thanks to the school teachers for their attentive guidance, which has resulted in the good results. HongJen Junior High School (宏仁國中) not only won the 2nd place of the School Team Award, but also won the 1st place in Biology and the 3rd place in Earth Science. Teachers and students who won the first prize in Biology received commendations from the president in the Office of the President on August 24th. Instructor Lee JiDu has guided students to win the first prize in biology for the fourth time, setting a record of receiving commendations in the Office of the President four times. County Mayor Hsu expressed her gratitude to the school teachers for their guidance to students, not only encouraging students to constantly try to solve problems and think creatively under the spirit of teamwork, and allowing students to find out questions after thinking, analyzing and inquiring, thereby stimulating their interest in scientific research, but also teaching students correct scientific research methods, attitudes and skills, thus cultivating many outstanding scientific talents. She encourages students to continue improving, contribute their talents, and bring glory to Nantou County’s science education. In addition to commend the award-winning teachers and students, County Mayor Hsu also interacted with the students in their exhibition booths to understand their motivations and ideas. This was an eye-opening experience for her because the students explained their research in extremely professional terms. “The students in Nantou are so awesome!” she thought. HongJen Junior High School students Liu HongRui (劉紘睿), Fu YuShu (傅聿樞), and Zhong JunYan (鍾峻諺), who won the first place in Biology at the National Primary and High School Science Fair, said that thanks to the plenty plants and rich ecosystems of insects in the school, the delta pyriforme is common in the campus. The motivation triggered their observation and research is the nest of the delta pyriforme which look like a beautiful wine jar and built in hidden gaps such as hollow bricks. With teacher’s instruction, they found its reproductive process is very interesting, which came out the awarded work "Reproductive Behavior of the Potter Wasp - A Study of the Reproductive Process of the Delta pyriforme: Mating, Nesting, Ovipositing, and Maternal Caring."
