The Nantou County Government purchased approximately 26,000 sets of adjustable school desks and chairs, investing a total of NT$46.44 million, as a replacement for the old wooden ones to benefit the students in a total of 100 schools, announcing the county's school renewal rate was achieved 100%. County Mayor Hsu ShuHua visited Caotun Elementary School in person on the morning of the 9th to inspect the quality and comfort of the new desks and chairs, expecting to provide students with a better learning environment by replacing the old ones.

 

The "Nantou County Government 2024 Replacement with Adjustable School Desks and Chairs Press Conference" was held at Caotun Elementary School on the morning of the 9th, attended by County Mayor Hsu and Wang ShuLing, Director of Department of Education. County Councilors Tang XiaoFen, Liao ZiYo, Lin YoYo, and Tsai MingHsuan participated and gave a speech to affirm the replacement. Students from the music class of Caotun Elementary School kicked off the event by playing the music "Little Hand Holding Big Hand" and "Kiki's Delivery Service". After that, via the wireless broadband network, fifth-grade students demonstrated the outcomes of interactive teaching approach with the interactive whiteboard and tablets. Finally, County Mayor Hsu entered the classroom of 1A to act as a temporary teacher and have a lively interaction with the students while sitting on the new desk and chair.

 

County Mayor Hsu pointed out that during her tenure as a legislator, she was very concerned about the issues of unsuitable old school desks and chairs and actively assisted schools in replacement through her friends from the business community. After she served as County Mayor, she further tracked the progress of school desks and chair renewal, and compiled a special budget in 2024 to subsidize schools purchasing adjustable desks and chairs. The county government invested a total of NT$46.44 million to purchase approximately 26,000 sets of adjustable desks and chairs in one go, enabling to benefit students in 100 schools. The adjustable desks and chairs are suitable for students with a height of 120 cm to 180 cm and are able to adjust the height of desk as students grow. This project ensures every school implements the replacement to provide students with a comfortable and healthy learning environment.

 

In order to shorten the learning gap between urban and rural areas and cultivate students' abilities in self-directed learning, cooperative learning, problem solving and creativity, County Mayor Hsu adheres to the idea of ” ​​digitalization flips rural education” to  actively promotes the policy of " IWB (interactive whiteboard) in Each Smart Classrooms.” To implement this policy, she approved a subsidy of NT$31.93 million in 2023 for 34 schools to purchase interactive whiteboard, and NT$ 21.68 million in 2024 for 81 schools. A total of NT$53.61 million was invested in two years to integrate modern educational technology into classrooms. The interactive whiteboard is an important tool to accomplish smart classroom. It can be used to display multimedia teaching materials and interactive teaching content to make courses more lively and interesting, enhance the richness and interactivity of teaching resources, and improve teaching quality and learning outcomes.

 

In addition, for the affiliated preschool of Caotun Elementary School, which was renovated from the old library, the county government planned to build a new preschool education building on the north side of the school, consisting of the preschool, music classes and special education classes. In addition to the subsidy from the Central Government, the county government raised an additional NT$13 million of self-funded funds to overcome the difficulty of construction project bidding, which was caused by insufficient funds approved by the Education Administration and rising construction costs. Eventually, the construction project was contracted with a total funding of NT$56.99 million, and is scheduled to be completed and put into use in academic year 2025.
