連至 A vaccine shortage in Nantou. County Magistrate Lin: The central government should allocate enough vaccines as quickly as possible, July 26 完整照片 On the 26th, County Magistrate Lin Ming-Chen publicly and sharply delivered a message to the central government on the urgent problem of a serious vaccine shortage in Nantou County. He said that it is totally untrue what the central government has claimed, that 3,000 doses of Moderna vaccine will be withdrawn since Nantou County can’t complete the vaccination work within the time limit. On the contrary, there is a shortage of at least 12,000 doses of vaccines for older adults aged 65 and 66, and education staff of junior high school and above and cram school. He hopes that the central government will not pursue statistics that aren’t comprehensive and precise enough, stop criticizing local governments’ hard work and efficiency on vaccination, start facing the problem of a vaccine shortage, directly respond to the requests from local governments, and allocate sufficient vaccine doses as needed.

On the 25th, the central government announced that 3,000 doses of Moderna vaccine will be withdrawn from Nantou County since the vaccination work hasn’t been completed. According to County Magistrate Lin, however, as of 6 p.m. on the 25th, there were only 336 doses of Moderna vaccine left, which had already been allocated to Nantou Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Nantou Christian Hospital and scheduled to be administered for pregnant women and other people on July 30. By that time, there will be no Moderna vaccine left. Due to such problem of 3,000 doses of vaccine being withdrawn that doesn’t exist, Nantou County Government received calls these days from citizens who have been waiting for vaccines complaining. The central government who discredited local governments like that is the one with hidden intent.

As for the recipients under relevant special projects, apart from the vaccines directly delivered to hospitals under the central government’s special project, local governments mostly haven’t been allocated enough vaccines yet by the central government. For example, the vaccines for education staff of elementary school, junior and senior high school is a matter of whether students will be able to come back school with peace of mind, but the first batch of vaccines from the central government is only for staff of elementary school. The 3,000 doses of vaccines for education staff of junior and senior high school in Nantou that the county government recently requested also haven’t been allocated. In addition, 797 out of 1,018 cram school staff in Nantou have been approved first, but not even one dose of vaccine has been delivered yet. Since the epidemic situation in Nantou isn’t as severe as other cities and counties, Nantou doesn’t have an additional 15% to 30% vaccine quotas allocated by the central government. As a result, Nantou County Government can’t reallocate the remaining vaccines to schools and education staff. For teachers and cram school staff who haven’t been vaccinated, it isn’t in their best interests. Such mismanagement shouldn’t be blamed on the county government, as all the vaccines are allocated by the central government, and the vaccination work will be carried out directly on the 1922 Covid-19 Vaccination Registration and Appointment Reservation Platform by the central government.

County Magistrate Lin said that the central government should face the fundamental problems of a vaccine shortage in Taiwan and the slow increasing pace of vaccination coverage, purchase more high-quality vaccines for people in Taiwan as soon as possible, and not discredit the implementation efficiency or pace of local governments’ vaccination work. In addition, the central government should figure out a way to address the problem of too many vaccines left or expired because too many people registered for vaccination on the 1922 Covid-19 Vaccination Registration and Appointment Reservation Platform but didn’t show up as appointed. This is what the central government should take care of the most, and it is also what the public should pay close attention to.
