Nantou County Boasts Top Output of Farm Produce
Agricultural products: tea,Water bamboo, Japanese Apricot, radish , sweet peppers, bananas, pineapples,passion fruit, grapes, lichees, loquats and tea-oil trees. Flowers: roses,lily, flamingo flower, transvaal daisy and Oncidium spp. (a type of orchids). Nantou's economy is based on agriculture. In order to develop its agriculture after joining the WTO, Nantou has become more intensive and technologically advanced. Farmers account for 32.86% of the population (at the end of 2012). Nantou's farm produce is well known both domestically and internationally. The high quality of produces has become an important icon of Nantou. Dongding Oolong Tea of Lugu, Songbo Evergreen Tea of Mingjian, Assam Tea of Yuchih and the high mountain tea of Sinyi and Ren-ai are popular among tea lovers. The teas of Nantou have been well-known around the world due to intensive marketing over the past few years. In addition to delicately made bamboo handicrafts, bamboo growers of Jhushan have developed value-added products such as the popular bamboo charcoal. The objective is to integrate each township’s local scenery and cultural features into their agricultural /fishing products. In this way, tourists may visit the thriving agricultural areas and sample the produce or even pick it themselves. Agriculture may be a declining industry in other places; however it has been reborn and has led the way for all industries in Nantou. Besides agriculture, forestry, fishing and husbandry, 30.65% of the total employable population is involved in industrial production and 58.89% in the service field (up to the end of 2011). Nangang and Jhushan Industrial Parks occupy an area of 435 hectares and are presently the headquarters for industrial production in Nantou. There are 2,547 factories and 22,494businesses registered in Nantou (up to December 2011). These manufacturers and companies are the power that drives commercial and industrial development in Nantou.
